From 1931 to 1953, the Riviera Nightclub was a beacon of entertainment and showtimes and a witness to architectural innovation.
In 1942, it transformed into a state-of-the-art marvel with glass windows, a retractable roof, and a rotating stage. This venue attracted stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Sammy Davis Jr., making it a hub for the era’s most renowned entertainers.
Among the nightclub’s stunning performers was Doris Markey, a dancer and singer whose beauty and talent captivated audiences. The Riviera was a place for celebrities and a magnet for those seeking a touch of stardom, drawing visitors from nearby New York City.
It was at the Riviera Nightclub that the story of Doris Markey and George Chaewsky began. George, brought to the nightclub by his cousin Frank Orzechowski, was immediately enchanted by Doris. Their romance quickly blossomed, leading to their marriage and the birth of their two children, Donna and Robert Chaewsky. The family eventually settled in Parsippany, New Jersey, where they built a life filled with love and joy.
Donna met Bruce Porter from Cedar Grove, NJ, and they had three children: Bruce G. Porter (BG), Damian Porter, and Skylar Porter. Tragically, George passed away on February 10, 1986, when Damian was just four months old and before Skylar was born. Despite this loss, the family’s bond remained strong, with Doris, affectionately known as “Momoo,” becoming the heart and soul of the family.
Momoo, the grandmother of BG, Damian, and Skylar, was a beacon of kindness, love, and fun. Her life revolved around her children and grandchildren; her presence was a source of comfort and joy. She was a remarkable woman, remembered for her beauty inside and out. Momoo’s influence was profound, and her memory inspired and uplifted her family long after passing on August 4, 2019, at 95.
Skylar Porter, known as Sky, inherited her grandmother’s resilience and passion. She began gymnastics at four, quickly progressing to a competitive level. Her talents extended beyond athletics, as she ventured into acting, landing roles such as Amy on “One Life to Live.” Skylar’s determination led her to The College of New Jersey, where she pursued higher education and later had a successful career in the corporate world.
